"Yoü and I" both hate this song...

...well, not really. I actually kinda dig the country-rock-dive-bar edge of Gaga's latest single. And the video is pretty damn good. I just hate them together. I like the mermaid metaphor and the cinematography, but the dance routines and high fashion styling just don't mesh well the back-of-the-bar tone of the song. But that's just my opinion. And what do I know??

The video itself could stand alone as a fashion film. I watched it three times (sound off), and I'm still seeing intimate details and of the clothes and characters she creates. The fashion in this video is the best of any so far. I'd rock that android-lost-on-a-dirt-road look any day. It kinda reminds me of my hometown, and of the abandoned robots in Artificial Intelligence. I like that combo. I was hoping Nicola Formichetti would post the fashion credits as he's done for many of her videos, but no dice so far. I'm pretty sure there's some McQueen in there, Mugler, and these amazing leather pieces by Zana Bayne.

Also, Jo Calderone makes an appearance. She already did this for Vogue Hommes, but I like the gender-fuck dynamic of her very feminine piano-pounding self interacting with her grungy, could-be-James-Dean-ish-if-he-wasn't-so-dirty side. Here's an interview* she did as a man:

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
Palermo, Sicily
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO / YOUR OCCUPATION?
Mechanic for my dad's business. This is the first time I've had my picture taken.
WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER YOU WANTED TO TO THIS?
Well, I always helped my dad at work, since I was a kid. I thought it would be fun to have my picture taken.
WHAT ARE YOUR AMBITIONS?
I'd love to own my own car shop, I have a bunch of my own ‘muscle' cars. Maybe if I take some more pictures I can afford it.
WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO LADY GAGA?
I met her at a shoot Nick Knight was doing. She's fuckin beautiful, and funny, and interesting. I was a little nervous for Nick to start shooting. She said, "Don't be baby, you were born this way." I took her out after. The rest is private ;)

  1. I TOTALLY know what you mean. I loved both the song AND the video, but I thought they were a little off from each other too. In fact...they were so off, I'm not sure she didn't do it on purpose. Couldn't tell you why, though.

  2. I didn't even think about that. But would there be a point to that? Ugh, this is hurting my head.
